RANKED #6:
HOLE 17 — Approach Shot (Cutting the Corner)
We have all been here. Waiting for the group in front of us to get off the putting surface, so that we can take our chances at throwing a high draw (or cut) over the large pines to a green with a significant elevation drop. Hit it flush and you could be looking at birdie, or even an eagle. Catch the tops of the trees and you might be looking at a triple (bogey). This shot is all about risk versus reward. There is danger short, right, and beyond the green, which has quickly ruined many rounds with only another hole to play. There are so many things to factor into this golf shot: ball above (or below) the feet, elevation change, wind factor, trees, and more. The wise golfer elects to hit it down the hill for a direct approach shot. But where is the fun in that? In these moments, we must ask ourselves, WWTD (What Would Tiger Do?). Tiger would definitely go for it. So I should too. Here goes nothing.
