Cowan Insurance Group and Brain & Mind Matters Charity Golf Tournament – St. Marys Golf & Country Club

Local Golf Tournament to Support Brain Injuries and Mental Health

May 14, 2015 – Stratford, ON – The second annual Brain & Mind Matters (BAMM) Golf Tournament, presented by Cowan Insurance Group, will be held at the St. Marys Golf & Country Club on Friday, September 25, 2015. Proceeds from the golf tournament will go to the Brain & Mind Matters Community Fund, a fund held at the Stratford Perth Community Foundation, which supports outpatient care for traumatic brain injuries and mental health in Perth County, St. Marys and Stratford.

Just announced, Cowan Insurance Group will once again be the Platinum (Title) Sponsors for the 2015 Brain & Mind Matters Golf Tournament, with an agreement in place to become long-term sponsors of the event.

“The BAMM Golf Tournament is a fundraiser first, and a golf day second,” shares tournament organizer and BAMM Co-Chair Matt Staffen. Participants pay a small entry fee to enter and then raise an additional minimum $250 in donations with the goal of using the local community as resource in building the fund. “What’s great is that 100% of the funds raised will go to BAMM and help people with brain injuries and mental illness in our community,” adds Staffen. Over $130,000 was raised at the first annual BAMM Golf Tournament in 2014.

“Today’s market place is not just about financial performance; it is also about investing in people and causes," notes Heather McLachlin, President of Cowan Insurance Group. “Earlier this year Cowan was recognized as one of Canada’s Best Managed Companies for a third straight year. We believe in the importance of implementing world-class business practices as well as investing in the broader well-being of our communities – that’s why we are so delighted to be sponsoring this important event that raises much needed awareness about mental health and brain injuries.”

About the Brain & Mind Matters Community Fund

It’s been over two-and-a-half years since local entrepreneur Rob Staffen fell off his bike at high speed and suffered a traumatic brain injury. Today, Rob still suffers from both physical and mental health issues as a result of the accident.

Supporting Rob through the process taught his family and friends how little they knew about mental health and brain injuries. A combination of the tragic passing of a close family friend from mental health issues and the process of Rob’s recovery made them realize that they wanted to share their growing knowledge to help build improved resources for others in similar circumstances in Stratford, St. Marys, and Perth County.

As a result, Rob and Sharon Staffen and family decided to start the Brain & Mind Matters (BAMM) Community Fund as a way to create awareness of and invest in local, outpatient care for brain injury and mental health programs and projects. The Staffen family hopes that by starting the fund and creating awareness through an annual BAMM Golf Tournament, they will help break down barriers and the stigma associated with brain injuries and mental health.
